Roses, Centurion surge into last eight

Roses United and Centurion took the last two available spots in the Community Cup quarter-finals with a win and draw against Noordelikes and Brakpan respectively.

With the defending champions Despatch and Old Selbornians (Group A), College Rovers and Roodepoort (Group B) and Hamiltons and Rustenburg Impala (Group D) all sure of a place in the knockout phase going into this weekend’s matches, all eyes were on Group C.

Roses went to Polokwane to face Noordelikes and they came away with maximum log points after outscoring their hosts seven tries to three, winning 58-21. Fullback Ryan Julies contributed 21 points to Roses’ cause from the kicking tee, slotting six conversions and three penalties. They will now play Rustenburg Impala in the first quarter-final.

Centurion hosted Brakpan and a win for either team would have been enough to join Roses in the last eight. The visiting Brakpan scored five tries to Centurion’s four, but neither side had the firepower to go for the win, as they drew 32-32. The result left them level on points on the log, but Ryno Coetzee’s Centurion snuck through on points difference. They face Hamiltons next, while College Rovers and Old Selbornians square off and Despatch tackle Roodepoort.
