Kriel to leave Lions

Lions flank Jaco Kriel has signed a contract with English club Gloucester, who are coached by Johan Ackermann.

This was confirmed by Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli in a press release on Monday.

‘Jaco has unfortunately been plagued with injuries stemming from 2017’s international duty and has therefore not been able to play for the Lions this current season,’ he said.

‘We are always sad to lose a player, but to lose a player of this stature hurts the franchise and the industry.

‘We wish Jaco a speedy recovery and rehabilitation, and hope to see him plying his trade back in South Africa in the future.’

Kriel played 69 Super Rugby matches for the Lions, scoring 21 tries, as well as 44 for the Golden Lions and 26 for the Golden Lions XV.

He has earned 11 Test caps for the Springboks.
