Kitshoff set to sign Stormers extension

Springbok loosehead prop Steven Kitshoff is set to be named as the Stormers’ new captain as he finalises details around a new contract with Western Province Rugby.

According to Netwerk24, Kitshoff is in advanced negotiations for a new contract with Western Province after being earmarked as the team’s new captain, succeeding Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, who this week completed his move to the Sharks.

Kitshoff’s agent, Hilton Houghton, confirmed that he is busy finalising the 2019 World Cup-winner’s contract with WP Rugby. The 29-year-old’s current deal runs through until 2023.

The decision to name Kitshoff as the new captain is a logical one, as he filled the role effectively during Kolisi’s injury-enforced absence last year. It will also be a major boost for WP Rugby to hold on to one of their talisman players, given that Kolisi and loose forward Jaco Coetzee have left the team in quick succession.

Western Province are planning to officially confirm next week the players who have extended their contracts.

Meanwhile, Western Province have managed to sign young loose forward Evan Roos from the Sharks. Roos, who is able to play at both No 8 and flank, joins as Juarno Augustus continues to be linked to a move abroad with the Northampton Saints.

Various reports – both locally and abroad – have suggested that Augustus will be heading off to England in just a matter of time.

SARugbymag.co.za understands that there was no request for permission to engage in such negotiations, while it’s also believed that he has no get-out clause.
