Chiefs call up Yamashita

Japan prop Hiroshi Yamashita has been added to the Chiefs squad for this year's Super Rugby tournament.

The 30-year-old joins the two-time champions to bolster their front row after prop Nepo Laulala sustained a serious knee injury, which ruled him out of action for the rest of the year.

Yamashita plays for the Kobe Kobelco Steelers, who have a long-standing development partnership with the Chiefs and the club had no problem releasing him upon request from head coach Dave Rennie.

'Yama is an experienced international prop and has quickly made an impression since his arrival. He earned the respect of his teammates immediately through his work ethic and his sense of humour,' Rennie said.

Another late addition to the Chiefs playing group was that of Counties Manukau opensider Sam Henwood, who comes in as cover for the injured Mitchell Karpik.

'Sam had an impressive National Provincial Championship and was unlucky not to be selected for a Super Rugby team. He's been playing in Portugal and is in good nick. Sam is ambitious, professional and excited to test himself at this level,' Rennie added.
