The Wynberg Winter Sports Festival has been cancelled due to the ongoing drought in the Western Cape.
The annual festival features rugby schools from both the Cape and northern provinces.
However, due to the drought in the Western Cape and possible complications associated with it, Wynberg Boys’ High have made the decision to call the festival off.
Wynberg’s head of rugby Mike Engelbrecht expressed his disappointment at the decision.
‘We cannot anticipate the chaos that may come with Day Zero. We cannot be sure that parents will be willing to countenance dropping and fetching boys in between driving to water collection points and queuing for water.
‘With our junior school being named as a collection point, traffic congestion may prove problematic for the whole area.’
Engelbrecht added that the school felt that it may be ‘immoral’ to host a sporting event while the crisis is ongoing.
