Loose forward Nizaam Carr's involvement in the Currie Cup is in doubt after undergoing arthroscopic surgery.

Carr sustained a shoulder injury during the back-end of the Stormers' Super Rugby campaign, which was then aggravated in their quarter-final defeat to the Chiefs at Newlands.

After the 25-year-old had an operation on Monday, Western Province coach John Dobson confirmed that the extent of the injury and recovery time frame are yet to be determined.

The uncertainty surrounding Carr's injury prompted Dobson to appoint Chris van Zyl as captain for the rest of the season after the lock initially led the team for just the opening game.

Meanwhile, wing Khanyo Ngcukana suffered shoulder-nerve damage and hooker Chad Solomon an ankle knock in WP's opening game against the Blue Bulls. Both are set to miss the next couple of weeks' action. Martin Ferreira, who played for the Kings in Super Rugby, has been training with WP and could be available to replace Solomon in the match 22.

Dobson also hinted that Cheslin Kolbe might be selected following his return from the Rio Olympics where he represented the Blitzboks, but that flyer Seabelo Senatla is still struggling with a fractured wrist picked up at the Games.

'Cheslin is back on Tuesday. He has a slightly sore calf, but might be in the selection frame for this week,' Dobson said.
