WP Rugby has offered ‘no comment at this time’ over reports that the iconic Newlands Stadium could be demolished in the near future.

The news first broke on Friday that the stadium could be demolished as early as 2021 as part of a deal to convert the rugby venue into residential and retail properties.

It effectively forms part of a much-needed financial solution for the cash-strapped Western Province Rugby Football Union, who has entered into an agreement with Investec in a multi-million rand deal that will enable WPRFU to settle some outstanding debt.

According to Sport24, prior to any development taking place, Investec will have to secure rezoning rights from the City of Cape Town before any new construction could begin at the site of the Newlands Stadium, and therefore the timeline for when it could be demolished remains unclear at this point.

When approached for comment on the matter, a WP Rugby spokesperson said that there would be ‘no statement or comment at this time’.

No confirmation of WP Rugby’s expected move to become the main tenant of the Cape Town Stadium from 2021 has been forthcoming, but in all likelihood, next year’s 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby campaign could be the last at Newlands for the Stormers.
