WP crowned U13 kings

Scrumhalf Jack Cloete scored 14 points as Western Province beat Boland 34-14 in the unofficial U13 Craven Week final in White River on Friday.

WP scored four tries, while Cloete, who is also a WP golfer and cricketer, was successful with all six of his attempts at goal (four conversions and two penalties) to end the tournament with a record of 15 from 19.

Boland drew first blood when hooker Corné Oliphant barged over from close range for a converted try, but their celebrations were short-lived as WP took control.

Two tries in the space of five minutes by blindside flank Armand Maritz and replacement Ethan James, both converted by Cloete, pushed them out to a 14-7 advantage. Cloete then succeeded with a penalty on the stroke of half-time as Province led by 10.

The young Capetonians continued to stamp their authority on proceedings at the resumption. Converted tries from fullback Duran Koevort and No 8 Rynardt Botha, together with Cloete's second penalty goal handed WP an unassailable 34-7 lead over their rivals.

And while Boland did manage to take their tally into double figures with a late try, it was scant consolation.

Western Province – Tries: Armand Maritz, Ethan James, Duran Koevort, Rynardt Botha. Conversions: Jack Cloete (4). Penalties: Cloete (2).
Boland – Tries: Corné Oliphant, Chadley Josias. Conversions: Curwin Gertse, Nazero Cleophas.
