Western Province Rugby Football Union vice-president Gerald Njengele has resigned from his position.
WP confirmed that Njengele’s resignation stems from the incident that took place at the Cape Town Sevens last December and the internal disciplinary hearings that followed.
Njengele was accused of launching a racial attack on Jessie Claassen, the national manager of the Vuka Rugby Programme – an SA Rugby-affiliated initiative that aims to cater for rugby development in the country.
He faced a four-year suspension for breaching the union’s code of ethics, but has since been cleared of all racism charges following an appeal.
WPRFU president Thelo Wakefield said that he received Njengele’s resignation on Thursday morning.
‘Njengele took the magnanimous decision this morning to resign in acknowledgement of the fact that no one person is greater than the union and that the name and reputation of WPRFU needs to be held in high esteem at all times.
‘We wish to thank him for his valuable contributions to the activities of the WPRFU and wish him well for his future endeavours.’
