Willemse welcomes Gelant signing
Published on June 3, 2020

Stormers flyhalf Damian Willemse says Springbok fullback Warrick Gelant has unique attributes that will boost the Stormers backline. DYLAN JACK reports.

Gelant was brought to the Stormers from the Vodacom Bulls after incumbent fullback Dillyn Leyds decided to move to France with La Rochelle.

The 25-year-old will add some much-needed experience to a Stormers backline that has also lost flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis and Welsh veteran Jamie Roberts.

‘I am really excited for Warrick to come down to Cape Town,’ Willemse said. ‘He is a great signing and a world-class player. The attributes he will bring to the Stormers, with Dillyn leaving, he will fill that position. He will definitely be a leader in that backline.

‘It was amazing to work with him at the World Cup. That was one of the first times that we ever worked together. I can’t praise him enough for his work ethic and the way he plays the game. He is such a natural baller. I am really looking forward to playing with him. ‘

WILLEMSE: Frustrating not to be able to play

Aside from his obvious attacking ability, Gelant has an underrated ability to kick with both feet and is more than comfortable kicking off his left foot, in particular.

‘Warrick will definitely play a huge role in our kicking game,’ Willemse said. ‘It is always such a helpful thing to have someone who can kick with both feet. So, Warrick will definitely help me and assist the team there, with his left boot. He has got great attributes and skills that he can bring to the team that will add another dynamic.’
