Utility forward Cobus Wiese will feature for the Stormers during the 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby season, according to coach John Dobson.

Speaking to Netwerk24, Dobson provided assurance that the promising 22-year-old would remain with the Cape franchise for the season, despite an earlier report from Rugby365 that Wiese was in advanced negotiations with English Premiership side Saracens.

The report indicated that the versatile forward has been offered a five-year deal, which would make him eligible to play for England by the end of his contract.

‘Cobus is available for Super Rugby,’ said Dobson. ‘He has a release clause which he could exert after the tournament if he wanted to.

‘I take note of Saracens’ interest but I also know they have challenges.’

The Stormers coach was referring to the suspended 35-point deduction and £5-million fine imposed on Saracens, after the club broke the Premiership’s salary cap.

Following a promising start with the Stormers, former Junior Springbok Wiese suffered several injuries hampering his career thus far. However, Dobson believes he will have an important role to play during their upcoming campaign.

While equally adept at flank, Wiese looks set to fill the void left by Eben Etzebeth’s departure to Toulon. He could also make a case for national selection, with SA director of rugby Rassie Erasmus holding the talented Wiese in high regard.
