Saru could have to pay CEO Jurie Roux R15-million if they suspend him for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities prior to his appointment.

Roux has been accused of making unauthorised payments totalling R32-million to Maties Rugby Club while he was a senior director of finance at Stellenbosch University and chairman of the rugby club. He has been summoned to the Western Cape High Court to pay back the money.

According to Rapport, while there is 'tremendous pressure' on Saru and president Oregan Hoskins in particular, to suspend Roux, any action against Roux could have 'far-reaching financial ramifications' for Saru.

Several sources told Rapport that Roux could walk away with R15-million if Saru expels him before the trial is completed.

The Saru CEO currently earns R3-million per year, excluding bonuses.
