White pessimistic about Super restart

Published on April 23, 2020

New Vodacom Bulls director of rugby Jake White does not see Super Rugby continuing this year with the competition still very much in the Covid-19 enforced suspension.

READ: Easy decision to join Bulls – White

White, who won the World Cup in 2007 while in charge of the Springboks, was brought into the Loftus fold in order to turnaround fortunes of the struggling franchise.

The Bulls sit down in 12th place in the current standings or second from bottom in the local conference with just one victory from six outings.

With South Africa in lockdown until at least 1 May and most international borders closed in a bid to flatten the curve, White is of the view that Super Rugby for the year may be over.

‘I don’t think we will play Super Rugby. I might be wrong‚’ White told Business Live.

‘Time is running out to get all those games in‚ especially if they are not sure about opening New Zealand and Australia.’

The Bulls boss though has also thought about a scenario where the competition does resume and said: ‘You can’t resume the same competition. I’d like to believe we’d start again. We wouldn’t start second last and the Sharks are on top. Otherwise there would be no use playing in that competition.’

Another much-publicised, and at this point more feasible option to the neutral observer, is a all-South African derby event but even then White does not want the first seven weeks of Super Rugby to come into the equation.

‘If we play in another competition and say it is called the Super Cup with the Kings and the Cheetahs you can’t have the previous results.

‘Let’s be fair‚ that wasn’t a competition. We’ve all said it time and again, Super Rugby is based on the draw. You can’t have seven rounds and then have a winner.’
