Which local team can go toe to toe with the Boks?

With the Springboks’ second Test against Georgia called off, which local team – hypothetically – would you like to see Jacques Nienaber’s men face off against as a warm-up for the Lions series?

The second Test between the Springboks and Georgia, scheduled to take place at Ellis Park on Friday, was cancelled due to a Covid-19 outbreak in both camps.

POLL DEBATE: Would Duhan start for Boks?

The match was set to serve as the Boks’ final preparations for the upcoming three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions. Most importantly, it would have allowed Springbok coach Nienaber to integrate some of the European-based players, such as Faf de Klerk and Cheslin Kolbe, who missed out on the first Test.

It could be argued that those players still need a Test match to get back into the Springboks’ structures and it has been rumoured that SA Rugby is busy looking at organising a match against a local opponent to make up for the cancelled Georgia game.

With that in mind, if given the option, which local side would best serve the Springboks as a warm-up match? Should it be one of the ‘big four’: the Lions, Sharks, Bulls or Stormers? Or should it be one of the smaller unions: the Cheetahs, Griquas or Pumas? Perhaps the Springboks could arrange an internal match against a South Africa A team?
