Stormers coach John Dobson says there would have been ‘no complaints’ if Johan du Toit had been red-carded for his aerial challenge on Louis Schreuder.
The incident occurred from the first kick-off of the match after just 10 seconds as Du Toit took Schrueder out as the Sharks scrumhalf leaped into the air to claim the ball.
Referee AJ Jacobs decided to show Du Toit a yellow card, despite the advice from TMO Willie Vos that the tackle warranted a red card.
MALLETT: I agree with the referee, it was a yellow card
While Dobson says his initial thought was that Du Toit only deserved a yellow card because Schreuder landed on his back, he wouldn’t have had any qualms had his player been shown a red card.
‘I didn’t initially think it was a red card when I saw he [Schreuder] landed on his back. I heard the TMO recommend a red card but thought the referee did well to get it down to a yellow because he landed on his back,’ Dobson explained.

‘But if it had been a red card, I’d have had no complaints. I sat there in the coaches box and just thought “What the hell just happened”. It’s never part of any plan whatsoever to do anything like that. If he [Du Toit] had gotten a red card, I wouldn’t have complaint.
‘I just thought once you could see he [Schreuder] was on his back, that the referee showed a bit of courage [to overrule the TMO]. But I can understand that people are a bit disgruntled because it’s not nice to see a guy come off on a medical cart. It’s just not nice. Apologies for that.’
