Sharks utlity back Leolin Zas could reportedly return to Western Province and the Stormers after a troubled two seasons in Durban.
According to Netwerk24, it’s a move that could be confirmed in the near future.
The 23-year-old signed with the Sharks at the end of 2017, having been ruled out of the Stormers’ Vodacom Super Rugby campaign after a leg injury sustained during a pre-season friendly at Newlands.
After a single Currie Cup appearance, Zas was drafted into the Stormers squad and scored eight tries in fifteen appearances during his debut Super Rugby season. A string of injuries since signing for the Sharks — combined with Springboks Makazole Mapimpi and S’bu Nkosi being regular starters — has had Zas struggling for consistent game time.
A former crowd favourite among the Newlands faithful, Zas also has experience in the fullback position after starting at 15 for the SA A side against the England Saxons in 2016.
The loss of SP Marais to former Bok coach Allister Coetzee’s Canon Eagles in Japan, has opened up the possibility of Zas joining Sergeal Petersen and utility back Damian Willemse in an exciting back-three combination.
Currently in fourth place on the log, Western Province head into Friday’s match against the Pumas at Newlands needing a win to keep their hopes of a semi-final berth alive. The match kicks off at 3pm.
