Western Province Rugby have announced an agreement with the City of Cape Town to move from Newlands to the Cape Town Stadium in 2021.
The City of Cape Town’s council has approved the agreement between the City, the Stadium and WP Rugby, who will now become the primary tenant of the stadium. The deal could potentially span the next 99 years.
WP Rugby will now have preferential access to play all senior professional matches at the stadium.
Repairs, maintenance and operation costs of the stadium will remain the responsibility of the City of Cape Town.
The stadium will still be used as a multipurpose entity and will be leased out for other events. WP Rugby have emphasised that the stadium will remain a host for all sporting codes.
WP Rugby chief executive Paul Zacks said there are still a few details that need to be worked out before 2021.
‘These Heads of Agreement are the culmination of three years of hard work,’ Zacks said. ‘There is much ahead of us before we can play at Cape Town Stadium in 2021.’
