Stormers coach Robbie Fleck says his side were their own worst enemies during their 34-27 loss to the Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday.

The Stormers wasted numerous opportunities to put the Waratahs away in the second half, before Tahs flank Ned Hanigan scored an 81st-minute try to win the match.

Fleck lamented the errors his team made, especially when it came to lineouts.

‘It is tough to lose in the last second but they had opportunities to score early on and so did we. It looked like no one wanted to win it at some stages.

‘We only have ourselves to blame. We had two lineouts and a scrum to get out of a defensive position and put them under pressure, but they got the turnovers and put the pressure on us.

‘Our lineout didn’t work as it should, so that is something that we have to work on. Our exits also were not as good as they should have been.’

Fleck added that he was pleased with the way his forward pack was able to pressure the home side at the breakdown and scrums.

‘I am disappointed, but there are still positives to take out of the match. Our scrum was good and our breakdown was good.

‘I thought our linespeed on defence was excellent, and we put them under pressure and turned them over a few times. When they were 14 men we also had opportunities.

‘But that’s rugby. That is how it goes and we will have to lift our heads and carry on.’
