Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp and Springbok captain Siya Kolisi both took to social media to wish each other a happy birthday this week.
Kolisi and Liverpool Jurgen Klopp were both leaders in two phenomenal teams, in two very different sports, which were nominated for the Laureus Sports Team of the Year in 2020: Liverpool for their Premier League heroics in 2019-20, and the Springboks for their 2019 Rugby World Cup victory.
Kolisi’s Springboks claimed the title, but the respect shared between the two was evident over a year later on 16 June, which marks their shared birthday.
Siya Kolisi took to Instagram to congratulate Jurgen Klopp, but his caption was accompanied first by an image of Klopp in a Siya Kolisi shirt, and then a video of the charismatic German singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Kolisi and delivering a heartfelt message on what he said was ‘a special day, no matter the year’.

Moments like these reinforce the beauty of the sporting world, in that two icons in very different sporting spheres can reach out publicly to appreciate one another.
