Scottish club Edinburgh have confirmed the signing of former Lions playmaker Jaco van der Walt on a two-and-a-half year deal.
The 23-year-old is a product of the Lions’ youth system, having played for the union across all age grades at junior level.
Despite being one of the Lions’ standout performers in Super Rugby and the Currie Cup over the past two seasons, the union did not offer Van der Walt a contract renewal for next season.
Edinburgh will travel to South Africa on Sunday for their two-match Pro14 tour against the Cheetahs and Kings, and Van der Walt is set to meet up with his new team then.
Head coach Richard Cockerill explained the reasons behind his decision to get Van der Walt on Edinburgh’s books.
‘Jaco is a skilful young player who is equally adept at standoff [flyhalf] or fullback. He’s an excellent goal-kicker and will provide cover in key areas for us.
‘We’re delighted that he’s chosen to be part of what we’re building here at Edinburgh.’
