USA humble Blitzboks

The Blitzboks suffered a shock 21-19 defeat to the USA in their Cup quarter-final at the Dubai Sevens on Saturday.

The USA clinched their play-off spot against South Africa with a historic 14-12 win over New Zealand in their final group match, and caused another major upset as they scored two late tries to snatch a superb comeback win over the Blitzboks. As defending Dubai champs, the Blitzboks will rue some uncharacteristic mistakes, and an extremely costly yellow card to Seabelo Senatla.

The USA scored first through Perry Baker, but Justin Geduld responded soon after when he pounced on a loose ball and darted over to help the Blitzboks draw back on level terms. Philip Snyman then dotted down just before half-time to give South Africa a 12-7 lead at the break.

Senatla continued his try-scoring run when he darted over to score early on in the second half, but he undid that good work when he played an opponent in the air and was shown a yellow card. Matai Leuta and Carlin Isles scored in Senatla's absence as the USA snatched the lead with just under two minutes left to play. Although the Blitzboks had one more opportunity to launch a meaningful attack, they conceded a crucial penalty, allowing the USA to hold on for victory.

South Africa will now play Argentina in the Plate semi-finals.
