Wallabies prop Taniela Tupou has confirmed he sustained ‘some cuts’, but is ‘fine’, after he was mugged outside the team’s hotel in Joburg on Saturday night.
The Wallabies are staying at the Sandton Sun ahead of the team’s opening Rugby Championship Test against the Springboks this Saturday, with the incident occurring on Tupou’s return to the hotel after a team dinner.

‘I was at dinner with the front rowers, it was just outside our hotel,’ Tupou told the Sydney Morning Herald.
‘On our way back someone just came from behind and took my phone. I thought it was one of the boys so I looked back and he was wearing a hoodie and ran with my phone.
‘I tried to chase after him and he got in the car and I got some cuts but I’m fine. I lost my phone but I can live with that.’
Tupou was treated for his cuts and is being monitored by Wallabies staff ahead of the this Saturday’s match, while police have taken statement from all the players who witnessed the incident.
