Tuks scored a last-minute try to beat defending champions UJ 19-14 in the Varsity Sevens Cup final at the Pirates Rugby Club in Johannesburg on Saturday. DYLAN JACK reports.
UJ started the stronger of the sides, with Vuyo Shongwe taking them close to the tryline before Blitzboks-contracted player Ronald Brown burst over for the first try.
However, Tuks hit back through a wonderful solo try from captain Lourens Pretorius, who sprinted 60m to level the scores.
Brown then ran from his own half to score his second just before the break, UJ lead 14-7 at half-time.
The men from Johannesburg dominated the opening exchanges of the second half and were particularly impressive in how they applied breakdown pressure onto Tuks.
However, with one minute to go and a powerplay in effect, it was the Pretoria-based team that hit the front when Lorenzo Cloete caught his own grubber and sprinted clear to dot down under the posts.
Meanwhile, the NMU-Madibaz claimed third place after beating UWC 24-19 in extra-time after the scores were level at 19-19 at full-time.
