Paul Roos, Paarl Gym and Maritzburg delivered crushing wins on day one of the Wildeklawer Super Schools festival.
Paul Roos ran in nine tries in their 67-0 dismantling of KES. Wing Nico Leonard scored a hat-trick, while centre Matt Galow and scrumhalf Herschel Janjies scored a brace apiece.
Paarl Gym emerged with a 40-7 drubbing of Affies. Both sides have had unusually poor starts to the season, but Gym took the ascendency early on and scored six tries. Affies’ only points of the game came from their in-form fullback Eduan Keyter.
Maritzburg College thrashed the Saru Invitational XV 56-15, scoring nine to two.
The new No 1-ranked Grey Bloem avenged their 2013 loss to Outeniqua with a 25-7 whipping. Grey conceded just one try and scored four. The scoreline could have been higher, for they converted just one touchdown.
Grey PE were shocked by EG Jansen, who won 25-21 in an exciting contest. Both teams ran in three tries, but the boot of Delano Kotze proved to be the difference, as the centre kicked two conversions and two penalties, helping his team to a memorable win.
In a less spectacular game, hosts Diamantveld lost 25-0 to HTS Middelburg in the final game of the day.
In other results, Monument eased past Boland Landbou 15-0, Selborne struggled past Drostdy 19-10, Waterkloof powered past Glenwood 39-27 and Oakdale beat Noord-Kaap 39-30.
