Wallabies and Waratahs hooker Tolu Latu has received an AUS$1 300 fine and a six-month licence suspension after a drunk-driving incident.
Latu was caught in a drunk-driving incident on the eve of the Waratahs’ game against the Reds, but still played in that match because he failed to inform his bosses before it became public. He was later stood down by the Waratahs and released from the Wallabies’ training squad.
The 26-year-old – who had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.135 when he was nabbed – pleaded guilty to both charges of drink driving, and driving on a suspended licence during his first court appearance on 6 June.
Latu appeared in court again on Friday for sentencing, with the magistrate handing down a hefty fine and a three-month extension on his existing licence suspension.
The player is expected to be issued with a breach notice by Rugby Australia’s integrity unit after the court process was finalised.
