DYLAN JACK looks back at the fourth round of the Varsity Cup and picks three players who stood out during Monday’s action.
Travis Gordon (Wits)
The 2017 SA Schools captain has been in inspiring form for Wits this season and was at the top of his game as he helped his side beat NWU 27-24.
Playing at No 8, Gordon shone throughout the match with a number of strong carries and big tackles, while also scoring a point-of-origin try in the second half.
If Gordon can continue his form throughout the Varsity Cup, a potential call-up from the Lions later this year may not be too far away.
Dan Jooste (Maties)
In his first Varsity Cup start of the 2020 season, Jooste wasted no time in making an impact, scoring a try within the first minute as Maties went on to hand UWC a hiding in Bellville.
The hooker, who is part of the Stormers’ Vodacom Super Rugby squad, was everywhere for the Maroon Machine and scored his second try in the second half.
It was a statement of intent from the 22-year-old, who has already made his Super Rugby debut in 2019.

James Tedder (UCT)
UCT continued their quest to finish in the top four and only just managed to keep their unbeaten start after a come-from-behind, 44-44 draw with CUT in Bloemfontein.
The Ikey Tigers’ had Tedder to thank after the flyhalf held his nerve to slot all six his conversions, including crucially nailing his effort after the full-time hooter to seal the draw. He also scored a point-of-origin try in the second half.
Tedder has carried his form over from the World University Championships last year and is vital if UCT want to have a shot at the Varisty Cup title.
