Thomas du Toit is set to be considered solely as a tighthead prop during the Sharks’ 2018 Super Rugby season.
Last year, Coenie Oosthuizen impressively served as the Sharks’ first-choice tighthead prop, but he has been ruled out of action for the entire season after suffering a serious knee injury towards the end of last year.
Following that injury, and after consultation with all parties concerned, Sharks coach Robert du Preez confirmed at Thursday’s squad announcement that Du Toit was set for the move to tighthead after a period where he was primarily regarded as a loosehead prop.
‘We have made a decision to move Thomas du Toit to tighthead this season. We have chatted to [SA Rugby’s scrum expert] Pieter de Villiers about it and Thomas is 100% committed to the change.’
Du Toit has played at tighthead prop before, but this will be seen as a particularly significant career move for the 22-year-old.
