The Sunwolves are set to be dropped from Vodacom Super Rugby just four years after being added to the tournament.
According to The Australian, the South African franchises pushed for the Sunwolves’ exclusion due to the taxing trip to Tokyo, as well as the fact that games involving the Japanese franchise did not draw crowds in South Africa.
The Sunwolves have struggled since joining the southern hemisphere competition in 2016, winning just seven of their 43 matches.
They have, however, enjoyed a far better 2019, beating the Chiefs in New Zealand and running the Reds, Blues and Waratahs close.
Sanzaar has confirmed that a statement regarding the future of Super Rugby will be released on Friday.
According to Brisbane’s Courier Mail, the Sunwolves will play Super Rugby in 2020, with a 14-team league format being adopted from the 2021 season.
