Crusaders coach Scott Robertson says the Stormers will need to learn how to score more tries if they are to make the step up as Vodacom Super Rugby title contenders. DYLAN JACK reports.
The Stormers slotted a penalty after the hooter to snatch a 19-19 draw with the Crusaders at Newlands, where their only try of the match was scored by captain Siya Kolisi.
It was a result that was built more on the Stormers’ excellent scramble defence, along with an incredible mental resolve to go the distance with the defending champions.
However, when taken in the context of the Sharks 21-21 stalemate in Christchurch, where all the Durban side’s points came through Curwin Bosch’s boot, it does highlight that South African team’s in general still trail the Crusaders in terms of finishing ability.
‘They are going to have to score more tries, there is no doubt about that,’ Robertson said on the Stormers. ‘You have to defend well, but also be able to score tries. That is part of the game that they have grown. Certainly, with the tactics that they have, it keeps them in the game, just like the Sharks.’

Robertson went on to highlight that the South African franchises have to improve their record away from home if any of them are to become title challengers.
While the Stormers have lost just once at Newlands, their only away wins have come against the Sharks and Melbourne Rebels.
‘The big challenge for the South African teams is to win on the road,’ Robertson said. ‘The [Vodacom] Bulls have done that for the first time in a long time [against the Rebels]. The Stormers have won two of their last 15 away games. They are tough to beat at home but they have got to learn to win on the road.
‘Once they do that, they will give themselves an opportunity to get home playoffs and really contest for Super Rugby. If they show the intensity they did tonight on the road they will be extremely tough to beat.’
