RG undergoing scan on ‘serious’ injury

Springbok lock RG Snyman is set for a period on the sidelines after undergoing scans on an injury he suffered minutes into his debut for Munster on Saturday.

Snyman, who made his first start for Munster alongside Bok teammate Damian de Allende, was forced off with a knee injury in the seventh minute of the 27-26 loss to Leinster in Dublin.

The 25-year-old fell awkwardly after poaching a Leinster lineout and had to watch from the sidelines as his side suffered a narrow defeat to the defending champions.


Snyman’s replacement and fellow South African Jean Kleyn also suffered an injury as he hurt his neck in the second half, which forced Munster to field centre Rory Scannell for the final 20 minutes of the match.

Munster coach Johann van Graan was left concerned over Snyman’s status as both he and Kleyn were sent for scans after the fulltime whistle.

‘He is going to go for a scan but it looks pretty serious,’ van Graan said after the match. ‘Very disappointed to lose him in the first seven minutes of the game as well as Dave Kilcoyne with an ankle and Jean Kleyn as well with a neck injury.

‘All three of them are going for a scan as quick as possible, but this one hurts. RG is a tough man. He doesn’t come off the field very often,’ Van Graan added. ‘He went up, stole that lineout and fell pretty badly. I am absolutely gutted about it.

‘Look, that is rugby. That is what this game is about, you got to come through tough times. I am proud of the effort of the lads.

‘To lose two of your ball carriers from the tight five in the first seven minutes of the game, against a team of Leinster’s calibre, with six forwards on the bench, it took a lot for our guys to fight through this.’

Bok coach Jacques Nienaber will also be concerned over Snyman’s injury, with a potential Rugby Championship in a bio-bubble in New Zealand coming up in November. Snyman was one of the Springboks’ four 2019 World Cup-winning locks, alongside Eben Etzebeth, Franco Mostert and Lood de Jager.
