Western Province have signed Brumbies prop Jean-Pierre Smith for the 2015 Currie Cup campaign.
Smith (along with his twin brother Ruan) represented WP at youth and Vodacom Cup levels before moving to Australia in 2011, where he made 24 Super Rugby appearances for the Brumbies.
The 25-year-old, who can play tighthead and loosehead prop, has been brought in to strengthen WP's front row during their Currie Cup title defence, in the absence of Steven Kitshoff and Frans Malherbe, who are with the Springbok squad. Vincent Koch, who is also with the Boks, is contracted to the Pumas for the Currie Cup.
Smith, a Paarl Gym old boy, is keen to make a contribution as the Cape side gears up for the domestic competition.
'I’m looking forward to returning home and contributing in some way. I was fortunate to play in Super Rugby games against some tough and experienced international props and have grown a lot during my time abroad, on and off the field,' Smith said.
WP director of rugby Gert Smal added: 'JP is a former Province man, so this a home-coming for him. His ability to play on either side of the scrum is a big boost for us, as Currie Cup match-day squads are made up of just 22 players, with one prop on the bench.'
Smith will link up with his new teammates for pre-season training on Monday.
