Former Wallabies star George Smith was held in police custody for 18 days before being released without charge after his arrest for alleged assault in Japan.
Japanese media reported that Smith was apprehended by police on New Year’s Eve after he allegedly refused to pay a 10,000 yen (R1,112) taxi fare and attempted to flee, before punching the pursuing taxi driver.
A day after the news broke, Smith was released from prison without charge. Police prosecutors in Japan are given up to 23 days to hold a person without charge.
Smith’s Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath apologised to the victim and said that staff and players will be educated to avoid future misdemeanours.
Smith is expected to return to Australia, where he will link up with the Reds ahead of the Super Rugby season.
