Gert Smal will reportedly join Jake White’s coaching staff at the Toyota Verblitz later this year.
The 57-year-old Smal is currently WP Rugby’s director of rugby, but with his contract coming to an end in October it is believed he has already agreed in principle to join Verblitz as their forwards coach.
According to Rapport, Smal turned down two offers from European teams in favour of working with White again. Smal was one of White’s Springbok assistant coaches between 2004 and 2007.
Meanwhile, the power struggle inside the WP ranks has escalated. According to Rapport, WPRFU president Zelt Marais’ plans to replace Smal with Paul Treu and to dissolve the WP board in order to gain control of the appointment and contracting of players and coaches, took a massive blow at a management meeting on Friday.
It was decided that those key responsibilities would remain with Paul Zacks, who is the CEO of WP’s business arm.
