Springboks and Sharks wing Makazole Mapimpi is heading back to Durban after completing his short-term stint with Japanese Top League side Docomo Red Hurricanes.
An agreement between the Sharks and Mapimpi allowed the wing to take an annual sabbatical in Japan and he signed on to go play for Johan Ackermann’s Red Hurricanes last year.
After the lengthy Covid-19 disruption, Mapimpi eventually made his club debut in November and his Top League debut earlier this year. His time abroad has now come to an end and Sharks coach Sean Everitt says Mapimpi will be in contention for Rainbow Cup selection soon.
‘Makazola arrives home on Friday evening so he can’t be considered for this week,’ Everitt explained. ‘We will do a medical on him on Monday and see where he is at, then look at his playing minutes, and that will determine whether or not he plays next week.’
The Sharks are scheduled to host the Bulls at Kings Park next weekend.
