Jan Serfontein scored a try in Montpellier’s 34-13 win over Toulon, while there were also European Champions Cup wins for Racing 92 and Edinburgh on Sunday.
Montpellier, who had a host of South Africans – including fullback Frans Steyn, wing Henry Immelman, centre Serfontein and halfback pairing Johan Goosen and Ruan Pienaar – in their starting lineup, claimed a crucial bonus-point win over their Top 14 rivals to keep their hopes of qualifying from Pool 5 alive.
The hosts made an emphatic start to the match and capitalised on a gap in the Toulon defence to see Serfontein go over under the posts just after the 10-minute mark. Pienaar converted the try and exchanged penalties with opposition flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, before Immelman finished in the corner to see Montpellier take a 15-6 lead into half-time.
A powerful driving maul just after the break gave Montpellier a third try. Pienaar again kicked the conversion and then went over for a try of his own to give them the bonus point.
Georgian Mamuka Gorgodze scored Toulon’s only try of the game, but by that stage the game was already won and Levan Chilachava went over a couple of minutes before full time to seal an emphatic victory.
WRAP: Toulouse add to Wasps’ European woes

Racing 92 dispatched the Leicester Tigers 34-11 to maintain their unbeaten start to Pool 4. Argentinian wing Juan Imhoff scored a brace, while Scotland flyhalf Finn Russel kicked two penalties and all four conversions for the French side.
