Seabelo Senatla has not received an Olympic medal after an injury saw him replaced by Francois Hougaard in the Blitzboks' squad that won bronze in Rio.
Senatla has been the Blitzboks' superstar this year, and despite featuring prominently on the first two days of competition at the Olympics, he suffered an untimely wrist injury in Wednesday's quarter-final against Australia.
He was subsequently withdrawn from the squad, and with his name no longer on the team sheet, the speedster was not one of the 12 players who received a bronze medal after the Blitzboks went on to beat Japan in the third-place match.
Although Senatla told Sport24 that Hougaard had offered him his medal, he ultimately opted not to take it.
'It's only fair. If the other guys come in it means that my name is taken off the list and they have to be there. Hougie (Hougaard) wanted to give it to me … But I was like “no, no … you keep it. Your name is on the list”.
'He's a very good guy and he wanted to give it to me. It's a procedure, so I only think it's right. It doesn't matter how much time I got or how much time he played … at the end of the day that's how it went.'
