Only one match, that of Selborne College vs Glenwood, was called off due to lightning, but of the completed games, there were wins for EG Jansen, Welkom Gim, Framesby, Pretoria Boys’ and Noord Kaap at the Kearsney Easter Festival on Saturday.
The much-anticipated first encounter between Glenwood and Selborne in four years ultimately ended in disappointment for all, as the game had to be called off shortly into the second half when lightning started to strike.
Selborne were 15-10 up at that stage, having looked the better side in the opening exchanges, but Glenwood had started to fight back at the end of the half.
The Eastern Cape school opened the scoring through a penalty from flyhalf Warrick Day, before some good hands saw left wing JP van Zyl score in the corner.
Although Day missed the penalty, Selborne added to their lead two minutes later as a strong carry from No 8 Raiden Masters brought them close to the tryline, allowing big lock Cullen Opperman to snipe around a ruck for their second try, leaving Glenwood 15-0 down.
The Green Machine needed to strike next to stay in the contest, and did just that as flank Ethan Smith burst through a gap and offloaded to tighthead prop Blaine Golden to make it 15-7 at half-time.
Flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse knocked over a penalty to bring Glenwood within five points, but dark clouds started to gather and the referee made the correct decision to call the players off the field, with the match ending in no result.
