Selborne beat Framesby 20-14 to end the Kearsney Easter Festival unbeaten, while there were wins for Welkom Gim, Glenwood, HTS Drostdy, HTS Middelburg and Noord Kaap on Monday.
In wet and rainy conditions in Botha’s Hill, Selborne ended their festival participation on a high with an entertaining victory over their fellow Eastern Cape-based school.
It took just over 20 minutes for the first points to be added to the scoreboard as Selborne flyhalf Warrick Day slotted a penalty to give his side a 3-0 lead. Soon afterwards, Day put captain Mntungwa Mapasela through a gap and the centre had the pace to get over the line for the first try.
Framesby narrowed the gap to just three points shortly into the second half when prop Luhan Fourie muscled over from close range. Selborne again extended their lead as Day kicked his second penalty, before Mapasela put a grubber kick through that was grounded over the line by wing Lawula Bata.
However, it was Framesby who had the final say as Tiaan Smit found himself in space after catching his own chip over the defence and offloaded to Fourie, who showed tremendous speed to score in the corner just after the full-time hooter.
In other results, Welkom Gim got a good win over hosts Kearsney College, beating them 21-8, while Drostdy sent DHS home without a win by claiming a 27-19 victory. Glenwood hammered Transvalia 38-7, Middelburg got a nail-biting 32-27 win against Pretoria Boys’ High and Noord Kaap opened the final day by beating EG Jansen 24-21.
