Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe celebrate together Edinburgh vs Glasgow Warriors Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe celebrate together
Published on December 29, 2019

Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe were influential in Edinburgh’s incredible 29-19 win over the Glasgow Warriors on Saturday.

The Pro14 match, which doubled up as the second installment of the 1872 Cup, was a brilliant contest.

The Scottish derby had a bit of everything and there was certainly no shortage of individual excellence on either side. But Van der Merwe and Schoeman, both former Bulls players, were a cut above the rest.

Breaking Glasgow’s defensive line at will, Van der Merwe made 118 run metres, more than any other player and the only one to exceed the three digit mark. Schoeman was equally as good, if not better. Apart from his supreme scrummaging, the prop made a whopping 19 tackles (the most in the game), five passes and 12 carries, earning the Man of the Match honours.

The sides were deadlocked at 7-7 at the midway mark, but Edinburgh pulled away late in the match to clinch the victory.

Meanwhile, Leinster emerged 13-6 victors from their Irish derby against bitter rivals Munster, a 14-man Treviso side registered a 36-25 win over Zebre in their all-Italian clash, Ulster overpowered Irish rivals Connacht 35-3 and in the two Welsh derbies, the Scarlets thrashed the Ospreys 44-0 and the Cardiff Blues edged the Dragons 16-12.
