Scarlets take down Leinster

The Scarlets celebrate after winning a late penalty Scarlets take down Leinster
Published on September 9, 2018 | Leave a response

The Scarlets claimed a thrilling 23-21 victory over Leinster, while there were also wins for Glasgow, Ulster, Connacht and Treviso in the Pro14.

In a repeat of last season’s Pro14 final and one of the European Champions Cup semi-finals, both of which were won by Leinster, the Scarlets got a measure of revenge in Llanelli. Fullback Leigh Halfpenny scored 13 points from the kicking tee, but it was stubborn defence late in the game that won it for the Scarlets.

REPORT: Dragons hold off committed Kings

The sides were level at 7-7 after 30 minutes, before a Halfpenny penalty put the hosts in the lead. A yellow card for Scarlets hooker Samson Lee on the stroke of half-time was followed by a Leinster try, scored by James Lowe, for a 14-10 advantage.

Halfpenny kicked the Scarlets back into the lead with two penalties and teammate Gareth Davies then dashed over for a try in the 70th minute.

Leinster hit back with a converted try from Rhys Ruddock to set up a grandstand finish, but the Scarlets were able to hang on for the win.

REPORT: Ospreys hammer Cheetahs

In other results, the Glasgow Warriors beat Munster 25-10, John Cooney emerged as the hero yet again as he scored 15 points to guide Ulster to a 30-29 win against Edinburgh, Connacht recorded a 32-13 bonus-point triumph over Zebre, and flank Braam Steyn scored one of three tries as Treviso shocked the Cardiff Blues 27-25.

Round 2 results:

Scarlets 23 Leinster 21
Glasgow Warriors 25 Munster 10
Ulster 30 Edinburgh 29
Connacht 32 Zebre 13
Treviso 27 Cardiff Blues 25
Dragons 27 Kings 22
Ospreys 46 Cheetahs 14
