Saracens have been handed a further 70-point deduction on the same day that interim CEO Edward Griffiths resigned from his role at the club.
Premiership Rugby confirmed last week that Saracens would be relegated at the end of the current season after they broke the governing body’s salary cap regulations.
Since then, Premiership Rugby has amended its regulations after discussions with the English Rugby Football Union and handed Saracens a further 70-point deduction.
This will be added to their 35-point deduction that was imposed on the club in November 2019 and ensure that Saracens would end the season bottom of the table.
On the same day, Saracens were hit with a further blow as they confirmed that Griffiths, who had been serving as the club’s interim chief executive since the start of the year, would be leaving after less than a month in his position.
Having previously been the club’s CEO, Griffiths returned to Saracens after former chairman Nigel Wray decided to retire following the revelations that he had entered into investments with the club’s top players, which had not been declared.
New Saracens chairman Neil Golding said in a statement: ‘The club is very grateful to Edward for temporarily stepping away from his other commitments to provide significant assistance during a difficult period, and wishes him well in the future.’
Griffiths added: ‘This was always going to be a very short-term appointment, and others are well placed to drive forward the rebuilding of the club.’
