The SA Student Sevens team won the World University Sevens Championships in Swakopmund this weekend.
The composite South African side – which boasted Blitzboks Rhyno Smith, James Murphy and WJ Strydom – defeated defending champions Australia twice on their way to the title.
The SA Students started off with a 66-0 victory in their pool opener against China and followed that up with a 26-14 win over Australia to advance to the quarter-finals.
Their next conquests were Malaysia (54-0) and France (14-12) in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
That set up a rematch with Australia in the final, but once again South Africa were too strong for their opponents, winning 24-14 to claim the silverware.
Meanwhile, the women’s team finished fourth after losing 17-0 to Belgium in the bronze medal match.
