President of SA Rugby, Mark Alexander, has suggested that South Africa are considering a bid to host the 2027 World Cup.
Speaking alongside victorious captain Siya Kolisi and director of rugby Rassie Erasmus after the Boks arrived back home, Alexander indicated that his union could set forth a proposal to bring the tournament back to South African shores after what would be 32 years.
‘We are considering 2027, but we’ve just won 2022, so we first want to conclude the Sevens World Cup that we have won,’ said Alexander.

It was confirmed last week that South Africa had won the right to host the 2022 Sevens World Cup tournament in September of that year. The eighth edition of the showcase event will take place at the Cape Town Stadium and will be the first time the tournament is hosted on the African continent.
SA Rugby was controversially beaten out by its French counterparts for the rights to host the 2023 edition of the 15-man game, despite an earlier evaluation report identifying South Africa as the preferred candidate.
Alexander admitted that many factors first need to be considered before plans are set in motion, but also did not rule out the chance of South Africa making another bid to host the tournament.
‘There is a lot of planning, so we have to make sure that we have enough money to host 2027,’ added Alexander.

World Rugby vice-chairman Agustin Pichot – who is on the board of American Rugby – said last week that his organisation would consider exploring the possibility of the USA hosting the World Cup in eight years’ time.
Rugby Australia have also previously voiced their interest in hosting the global showpiece in 2027.
