SA Rugby could consider ‘state-of-origin’ series

SA Rugby could consider hosting a ‘state-of-origin’ series during the festive period if the Springboks are unable to play Test rugby in 2020.

Hopes for a ‘bio-bubble’ in Australia or New Zealand seem to be key for the Springboks to go through a necessary period of safety checks and ‘quarantine’ before possibly taking part in a shortened Rugby Championship tournament later this year.

Although that hope still remains, there are many factors that could complicate whether the Boks would be able to participate in such a competition.

According to Rapport, one of the contingency plans for the Springboks could see an internal three-match series played between sides selected on where players were born or went to school.

Interestingly, just last week SARugbymag.co.za opted to pick versions of a hypothetical ‘north-south’ side, which saw selections rather made from either inland or coastal teams.
