The British & Irish Lions’ fourth tour match against the South Africa A team will go ahead as scheduled on Wednesday evening, despite talk of a potential switch with Saturday’s Stormers game.
Following a Covid-19 outbreak in the Springbok squad, a possible change in the Lions tour schedule had been mooted, which would have the tourists instead face the Stormers on Wednesday and the South Africa A game on Saturday.
However, SA Rugby confirmed that the Springboks were able to resume training this past Sunday, after six rounds of Covid-19 testing and a six-day preventative self-isolation period cleared a large group of players to return to the field. All the players and management who had tests on Saturday returned negative test results, which paved the way for the players to train on Sunday.
Four rounds of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing over the past week delivered new positive cases among the players and three among team management.
The players who tested positive were Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, Dan du Preez, Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi, Scarra Ntubeni and Makazole Mapimpi. However, SA Rugby has called up Lizo Gqoboka and Fez Mbatha to the squad as cover.
This means that the Springboks will be able to field a team to take part in Wednesday’s South Africa A game against the Lions, which will kick off at 8pm.
SA Rugby director of rugby Rassie Erasmus will be announcing the team on Monday afternoon.
