A KPMG preliminary report accuses Jurie Roux of misappropriating millions of rand to benefit the Maties Rugby Club during his tenure as club chairman.
Netwerk24.com reports that according to the preliminary findings by KPMG, Roux used software that would not leave an audit trail in making 'unauthorised' transfers from the university's reserve funds to Maties Rugby Club. The report reveals that Roux 'hid' spending and 'withheld' about R35-million.
The funds are believed to have been transferred to various cost centres related to the rugby club, and used for a variety of club activities.
Roux left his job as chairperson of the Maties Rugby Club in 2010 to become Saru CEO, while colleague Chris de Beer (the then deputy director of student fees), who is also implicated in the matter, was fired by the university in 2012.
‘Based on expert evidence and reliable interviews, it is obvious that Roux and De Beer worked together to hide it and/or to commit a misrepresentation,’ the report reads.
According to the audit, former Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant, former Saracens loose forward Ernst Joubert, former Maties coach Chean Roux and new Blue Bulls Currie Cup coach Hendré Maritz all benefited from the irregular financial management.
Roux’s lawyer Frikkie Erasmus said his client would not comment on the allegations in light of the damage it could do in the midst of his legal battle with the university.
