Saru’s executive committee will discuss the allegations of financial mismanagement levelled at CEO Jurie Roux at a meeting next Friday.
According to Netwerk24.com, Saru president Oregan Hoskins admitted the matter had to be addressed after a preliminary report from KPMG alleged that Roux misappropriated millions of rand to benefit the Maties Rugby Club during his tenure as club chairman.
‘It’s serious charges and I’ve told the members of the executive committee that things are starting to turn ugly, we have to discuss it,’ Hoskins commented.
The report, which also implicates Roux’s former colleague Chris de Beer (the then deputy director of student fees), suggests they 'hid' spending and 'withheld' about R35-million.
The damning findings from the initial report have brought Roux’s future into question, while former Springbok and widely respected coach Brendan Venter also questioned how the allegations might effect the process of appointing the next Bok coach, with Roux driving that process.
‘The board of SA Rugby have decided that Jurie should decide who the new Bok coach should be. Maybe not the best idea so far this year,’ Venter tweeted. ‘Can Jurie make an informed, objective decision if one looks at these new revelations regarding his conduct at Stellenbosch?’
