Lions centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg will be sidelined for up to four months after undergoing ankle surgery on Friday.
Janse van Rensburg suffered a fractured cartilage joint as well as a high-grade syndesmosis in his ankle during the Lions’ 26-23 win over the Stormers at Newlands on 26 May.
The Lions confirmed on Monday that the 23-year-old was forced to have reparative surgery after his initial recovery process was unsuccessful.
‘He got injured in the Super Rugby game against the Stormers and did not settle as expected. He will be out of rugby for approximately four months from the date of the operation,’ read the Lions statement.
Janse van Rensburg will therefore miss the remainder of the Lions’ Super Rugby campaign.
Meanwhile, the Lions confirmed that Springbok duo Malcolm Marx and Warren Whiteley have returned to full training and are available for selection for the Rugby Challenge fixture against the Blue Bulls at Ellis Park on Sunday.
