England captain Chris Robshaw has conceded he made the wrong call against Wales at the 2015 World Cup.

The hosts were trailing 28-25 with two minutes remaining in the crucial Pool A clash when they were awarded a penalty within range of flyhalf Owen Farrell’s boot. Robshaw opted to go for the win instead of the draw, England fumbled the resultant lineout and Wales held on for the win.

The decision by Robshaw proved decisive in England’s failure at their own tournament with the final pool results showing a draw against Wales would have been enough to see England advance to the knockout stage. Robshaw admitted with hindsight that he’d taken the wrong option.

‘If you had a time machine you probably would [change the decision],’ he said. ‘But unfortunately we don't and you just have to get on.

‘If you had known all the results and how things would turn out you could have planned every game a bit better. That is not to be.’

The flanker said the first few weeks after the tournament were not easy and he found himself constantly thinking about what might have been.

‘You’re thinking about what potentially didn't go well, what things would you have done different. You look at the way the game turned out and if we had drawn, what would have happened.'

Robshaw’s future with the national side is still uncertain ahead of new coach Eddie Jones’s Six Nations squad announcement.
