Rennie favoured for Wallabies job

Dave Rennie Dave Rennie has been linked to the Wallabies job
Published on October 24, 2019

Rugby Australia has reportedly informed its staff that Glasgow Warriors and former Chiefs coach Dave Rennie will be the new Wallabies head coach.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that high-ranking officials in RA are preparing for Rennie’s arrival by informing potential applicants for a backup staff role that the New Zealander already has the job.

Rennie famously coached the Chiefs to their first-ever Vodacom Super Rugby title in 2012 and guided the team to a second consecutive title in 2013.

He joined the Glasgow Warriors as a successor to current Scotland coach Gregor Townsend in 2016, helping the Scottish side to the PRO14 semi-finals in his first season and the final in 2018-19.

The Warriors have denied that Rennie could leave the team before the current PRO14 season ends next year.

‘There are a lot of articles, a lot of speculation and a lot of theories, but Dave is committed to Glasgow until at least the end of the season,’ Warriors assistant coach John Dalziel told the local media.  ‘There is never a thought of that changing. He is a man of real good stature and he’s working harder than ever to make sure Glasgow have a fantastic season this year and beyond.’

Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika left the team under a storm after failing to take them beyond the quarter-finals of the 2019 World Cup. Cheika stated after resigning that his working relationship with RA chief executive Raelene Castle was non-existent. The two are believed to have got into a heated argument after a Wallabies function in Tokyo during the World Cup.
